The Horse Guard Barn Just Got a New Lease On Life!

Horse Guard Barn Roof Tarped Over

Some of you may have noticed that the Horse Guard barn roof was tarped over recently. Jim Putnam and Len Tolisano brought in Ed Roy, President of Walker Crane and John Cyr, Owner of Cyr Construction (both of whom are Avon High School Alumni) to help Avon Historical Society tarp the roof on a cool Thursday, January 5th, 2012. Thanks to their help, the barn won't suffer any further leaks for the forseeable future, and we can begin work on the next stages of adaptive re-use.

Mike Egan from Walker Crane arrived on site with an All Terrain Telescopic Boom Crane for the crew.

The crane allowed us the opportunity to bring the tarps, battens and plywood up to the roof.

Avon Historical Society Photo of 2010

Pine Grove Schoolhouse

This image of Pine Grove Schoolhouse was taken by AHS Board Member Glenn Lawrence. Among the best of the outdoor photos we managed to capture in 2010, this image was taken in August.

A "Classic Hadsell Vantage Point," coincidentally, the image records how the building would have looked with relatively fresh coats of white and green trim paint, as was discovered in the historical record in the process of repainting the exterior.

About Us

Founded in 1974, the Avon Historical Society is an all volunteer, nonprofit organization devoted to the conservation of Avon's historical and cultural past and its educational relevance to our life. Membership in The Avon Historical Society is open to the public.

Currently the Society's projects include full restoration of the Derrin House on West Avon Road, proper storage of many artifacts in the Living Museum and Pine Grove Schoolhouse, answering local history questions, giving referrals to those who seek "experts" to help with their historic home or genealogy questions, publishing a newsletter and planning fundraising events.

The Society belongs to the Farmington Valley Visitors Association, Connecticut League of History Organizations, and the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.

In 1972, the National Register of Historic Places designated a section of West Avon as the Pine Grove Historic District. The District includes the Pine Grove Schoolhouse and five homes built prior to 1865. Signs designating the district are located at the entrances and exists on West Avon Road and Harris Road.

An historic building survey was completed in June 1997 by the town of Avon with a grant from the State Historic Commission. Many sites have been identified as potential historic districts. The complete survey can be viewed at Town Hall, the Avon Library, or at the Living Museum.

The survey will be used by the Society to help identify single buildings or possible districts for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Anyone interested in seeing what is currently known about their home, please call the Society at 860-678-7621 or the Town Hall at 860-409-4302.
